Jesus is maybe the most talked about person in all of history.
No other name inspires so many different feelings. In his
name, some of the most wonderful and beautiful acts of human
history have taken place, and, unfortunately, his name has
been used to excuse some of the most terrible events as well.
The real question is, with all the good and bad controversy
surrounding his name, can we:
It is from the Bible
that we find our knowledge and understanding of the life of
this man called Jesus Christ. Jesus was a Jewish man who lived
around 2,000 years ago. He lived and preached in a region
of the Middle East, which today is called Israel.
The Bible gives a stirring and vivid picture of this man
describing:
- His miraculous birth
- His preaching, teaching, and the incredible miracles
he performed
- His brutal death at the hands of the religious
leaders of his time
- His amazing resurrection from the dead three
days later
What makes Jesus different from all of the other influential
religious leaders of history? The answer lies with the astonishing
statements that he made. Jesus never looked to set up his
own religious system of rules and regulations to follow. He
wasn’t looking to overthrow the political system of the day.
He made one startling claim:
Perhaps you have heard the term the “Gospel.”
This was the name given to the message that Jesus preached.
The word gospel means good news. His message
was called this because it’s wonderful news to every imperfect
person (which includes all of us) who wants to know a perfect
God.
The message of Jesus was unique. He said to have a relationship
with God did not involve strict adherence to a rigid lifestyle
of rules and religious regulations. Jesus taught:
C.S. Lewis, the famous author of the “Chronicles of Narnia”
wrote that the life and message of Jesus was so unique that
it demands a response from every person today. The incredible
claims of Jesus are so powerful that He is either:
- An intolerable religious bigot
- A crazy lunatic
- A pathological liar
- The Son of God
If Jesus really is the Son of God
as he claimed to be, then no matter how messed up
our lives might be, we can still find hope. Now we have a
chance to be set free from the pain and frustration of our
everyday life and have real meaning and purpose.
