Do you think of:
- Angry, mullet head preachers condemning
everyone to hellfire and damnation
- That boring place you were dragged to
as a kid
- Arrogant, hypocritical people who judge
others
- A place bent on rules that take all the
fun out of life
The word Church doesn’t generate a very good
response with some people these days. Unfortunately, there are
reasons why this is.
Whether from a bad experience they had when
they went there, or by unfavorable encounters with actual church
members, far too many people have been turned off by the idea
of church.
Whatever the reason might be that you struggle
with the concept of church and organized religion, you are not
alone.
Jesus
did not mince words when he called the arrogant, self-righteous,
religious leaders:
- Frauds
- Hypocrites
- Deceivers
Here is the interesting thing about Jesus;
even though he had his issues with hypocritical, religious people,
he didn’t give up on the church.
Jesus made this clear in the Bible.
He said the clothes we wear, the type of building we meet in,
or the style of music we use to worship, do not define the real
church.
Jesus said the marks of the church would
be people who:
- Believe in the Good
News
- Love God with all their heart
- Love one another as themselves
- Serve a hurting world
God
tells us in the Bible that it’s important to connect with other
people who believe in the good news in order to encourage and
support one another. The Bible states:
“We should not stop gathering together with
other believers, as some of you are doing. Instead, we must
continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day
of the Lord coming.” (Please see the book of Hebrews 10.25)
